Raíces

1997

Raíces explores the rich history of flamenco, delving into centuries of cultural blending in Spain. The art form can be traced back to Northwest India and present-day Pakistan, later brought to Spain by migrating Gypsies. These influences are present in flamenco’s movements, rhythms, improvisation styles, and the unique classification of palos and ragas.

This key work from Flamenco Rosario, originally performed in 1997 and later revisited in 1999 and 2011, engages with a multi-layered history defined by the coexistence of Christians, Arabs and Jews in Andalucia, as well as a period of social and political turmoil. Flamenco began as a voice of protest, creating  a cultural landscape in which rythmic and melodic memories continue to be passed down through generations.
